Tochman, Caspar

General in the Confederate Army during Civil War. Born in Letownia, in 1797 in Poland. In 1830-1831 major of Polish army in the struggle against Russia. Came to U.S. in 1837. Attorney at law in Washington, D. C. Founded Polish Slavonian Literary Association in the State of New York. Travelled extensively in U.S. in 1840-1844, delivering about a hundred lectures on Poland. Member of President Davis' staff at the beginning of the Civil War. Organized the Polish Brigade at New Orleans, La.; composed of the Fifteenth Louisiana Infantry. Died December 20, 1880.
